- ★ ★ ★ ★ ★You get to see earth being born. How awesome is that? Technically could you get to the lava on your own without a guide? Sure. But given the flows were a 3 mile hike each way (6 r/t) from the place where the bus drops you, and the return trip is in the dark, I was really glad we had guides with us. (The location of the flows changes constantly. Your trip might be a few feet from the road, or a few miles like ours.) The guides also entertained us with lots of local history, stories, safety tips, and community perspective that I never would have known in my own.By Gavin Farrington, October 20, 2017
